China’s Giant Panda Ecological Park is one of the world’s greatest conservation success stories – attracting thousands of ‘eco-tourists’ from around the globe, while giving a much needed boost to the giant panda’s survival. The new programme offers a unique opportunity to make a real difference in the long-term survival prospects for the giant panda, while enhancing our understanding of this much-loved animal through sustainable planning and development.

In 2004, Halcrow won first prize in the prestigious International Competition of Landscape Design for the Chengdu Giant Panda Ecological Park. The goal was to transform the Chendu Giant Panda Ecological Development Company’s giant panda breeding and research base into an ecological park with improved facilities for both the pandas and visiting public. This award-winning 234-hectare park is located near the city of Chengdu, China. At elevations from 350 metres to 5,600 metres above sea level, it is the only place with both wild and captive giant pandas in the world.

The master plan, based on the giant panda’s footprint, focused on creating an international centre for giant panda breeding, rearing and scientific research, while encouraging public access, education and recreation. The team was challenged with sensitively and imaginatively integrating a number of potentially conflicting uses and users as part of our master planning and design activities. These included

  • Developing rearing and research facilities that protect the welfare of the giant panda – creating a safe, natural, panda friendly environment that enhances breeding, provides animal security and solitude, and controls potentially disturbing activities
  • Developing a space that optimize opportunities for human interaction and understanding of the giant panda, and meeting broader environmental protection and bio-diversity goals
  • Creating a leisure park for human recreation while avoiding a giant panda “Theme Park

Through sensitive design, we delivered a master plan that provides a successful solution to the conflicting interests of public access and giant panda protection and breeding.

The new park has received numerous awards and recognitions, including the Global 500 of the United Nations Environment Programme; Gold Medal of China’s Green Technology; First China Environment Prize; and National AAAA Tourism Attraction.
